Technician

Liam’s technician journey began in 2017 when he took on technical duties for Manny Charlton’s U.K. tour. Under Manny’s mentorship, the former Nazareth guitarist, Liam drew on over two decades of experience observing his own technician, Graeme Mennie, at Kinellar Guitar Studios, known for designing and creating pickups for Baz Warne of The Stranglers.
Liam and Manny were both endorsed by Vintage® , which is how they first met. Prior to this opportunity, Liam had been a long-time fan of Manny’s work, making their collaboration even more meaningful.
Liam entered the role equipped with a deep understanding of Manny’s recording and gigging equipment. He became the caretaker of Manny’s cherished Gibson Les Pauls, Fender Stratocasters, and Marshall and Stewart Denny Custom Amplifiers, along with a dynamic pedalboard setup. Liam was entrusted with ensuring that Manny’s onstage presence resonated with the legendary sound he sought.
Manny’s impressive career included his work as a solo artist, his pivotal role with Nazareth, and his connections with Guns N’ Roses, which further underscored the significance of the sound and performance Liam was tasked with maintaining. This rich musical legacy added to the weight of responsibility that Liam felt in delivering Manny’s iconic sound during performances.
The experiences of touring with Manny were documented in footage featured on the bonus DVD for The Fluffy Jackets‘ “Something From Nothing” released in 2019. Manny’s untimely passing in 2022 marked the end of an era, yet his legacy lives on in the unfinished projects Liam has collaborated on, including The Fluffy Jackets‘ “The Rise And Fall Of The Songwriter,” which was released on all major streaming platforms on May 17, 2024. Additionally, Liam has contributed to restoring video footage of Manny’s final live show, a project Manny had planned to complete himself before his passing. This reflects their enduring friendship and shared musical journey.
In the following years, Liam was sought after by renowned artists such as Rod Jones of Idlewild and Fatherson for prestigious performances, including the esteemed Aberdeen Brewdog AGM concerts. Although health challenges prevented him from seizing every opportunity, his dedication to the craft remained unwavering.
In 2013, Liam honed his skills as the in-house technician at Classaxe, an Aberdeen-based music shop, where he gained invaluable experience in instrument maintenance and repair.
In 2024, he was approached by Goldstar Records, a Highlands-based vinyl and music store, to restore and set up pre-owned instruments, further solidifying his reputation for quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.
As Liam’s journey continues, driven by his love for music and commitment to technical mastery, he invites you to connect and see how he can contribute to your musical projects. His schedule is open, and he’s excited about the chance to collaborate with fellow music lovers and industry professionals.
